犬の授業料 ―― Old Blue ―― 
ワイオミングの若いカウボーイが大学に入った。ばかなことに、学期の半ばで持ち金の全部を浪費してしまったので、実家に電話をかけた。
「お父さん、信じられないかもしれないけど、近頃の教育はね、ものすごく進んでるんだよ。ここララミーの学校では犬の教育講座もあってね、ウチのオールドブルーにも話し方を教えられるんだ」
「それは凄いなあ」と父親は驚いた。「その講座をオールドブルーに受けさせるにはどうしたらいいんだ？」
「1,000ドルを添えて、犬を送ってくれるだけでいいんです」と若いカーボーイが答えた。「そうしたら僕が講座を受けさせます」
そこで父親は1,000ドルを添えてオールドブルーを送り出した。
学期が始まって３分の２が過ぎたころ、お金がまた底を突いた。息子は再び実家に電話を掛けた。
電話に出た父親が尋ねた。「オールドブルーはどうしてる？」
「素晴らしいです、お父さん。ぺらぺら喋りまくっていますよ」といって直ぐに言葉を継いだ。「信じられないかも知れないけれどね、学校は講座が成功したので、読み方も教え始めているんだよ」
「読み方だって！？」と父親は目を丸くして「冗談を言うなよ。ところでその講座をウチの犬に受けさせるにはどうやったらいいんだ」
「2,500ドルを送ってくれるだけで、あとは僕がクラスに入れてあげます」
即座にお金が届いた。だが問題があった。年末になれば、犬が読めないどころか話すこともできないことが父親に知られることになる。そこで、カウボーイの息子は犬を撃ってしまった。
年末に実家へ帰ると父親はうきうきして、息子に尋ねた。「オールドブルーはどこだ。早く、犬が読んだり話したりするのを見てみたいんだがね」
「お父さん、つらい話があるんです。きのうの朝、ドライブに行こうとして家を出る直前にはブルーの奴、 何時ものように居間のロッキングチェアーにゆったり坐ってウォール・ストリート・ジャーナルを読みながら、ふと僕のほうに振り向いて、お父さんは今でもあの通りに住んでいる野暮な小娘の尻を追っかけているんでしょうかと訊いたんです」
父親が真っ赤になって叫んだ。「そのたわけたオールドブルーが母さんに話をしないうちに撃ってくれないか」
「ちゃんと処置しました、お父さん」
「よし、それでこそ俺の息子だ」
快適かつ勝手気ままな監獄生活
A Let's put the seniors in jail, and the criminals in a nursing home.
This way the seniors would have access to showers, hobbies,and walks, they'd receive unlimited free prescriptions, dental and medical treatment, wheel chairs etc. and they'd receive money instead of paying it out.
They would have constant video monitoring, so they could be helped instantly,if they fell, or needed assistance.
Bedding would be washed twice a week, and all clothing would be ironed and returned to them.
A guard would check on them every 20 minutes, and bring their meals and snacks to their cell. They would have family visits in a suite built for that purpose.
They would have access to a library, weight room,spiritual counselling, pool, and education. Simple clothing, shoes, slippers, P.J.'s and legal aid would be free, on request.
Private, secure rooms for all, with an exercise outdoor yard ,with gardens. Each senior could have a P.C. a T.V. radio, and daily phone calls.
There would be a board of directors, to hear complaints, and the guards would have a code of conduct, that would be strictly adhered to.
The "criminals" would get cold food, be left all alone, and unsupervised. lights off at 8pm, and showers once a week.
Live in a tiny room, and pay $5000.00 per month and have no hope of ever getting out. Justice for all.
